Abba jukebox musical for Xmas 2025

Tickets are now on sale (here) for the return of the Abba jukebox musical, Mamma Mia! to the Edinburgh Playhouse for the 2025 Christmas season.

A new UK tour of the perennially popular show with open at Southampton’s Mayflower in October next, visiting Bristol and Oxford before bedding in at the Edinburgh Playhouse for a four week run from Tuesday 9 December 2025 to Sunday 4 January 2026.

Arguably one of the most adept examples of its genre, shoehorning existing songs into a new plot, Mamma Mia! has now been on the go for 26 years. And, like Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus’s music, Catherine Johnson’s book doesn’t look like it’s going away any time soon.

The musical’s stats are somewhat mind boggling, but the bottom line is that the live show has been seen by over 70 million people. Although that does include many, many people who will have seen it multiple times.

Just in case you are not one of those 70 million, the musical is set on the fictional Greek island of Kalokairi where 20-year-old Sophie is preparing to marry her fiancé, Sky.

Does your mother know?

Sophie dreams of a perfect wedding where her father walks her down the aisle – but doesn’t know his identity and her mother is not telling. So sneaks a peak at her mother’s diary to find three possible candidates, who she secretly invites to the wedding.

The show was last in Edinburgh in 2019, when Emma Mullen played Sophie (Æ review: ★★★★☆ Take a chance) and spend a Christmas season at the Playhouse in 2016 (Æ review: ★★★★★ How can I resist you?) when Lucy May Barker played Sophie.

Casting for the 2025 tour will be announced at a future date.
