★★★★☆      Intimate and raw

Bedlam Theatre (Venue 49): Tue 20 – Mon 26 Aug 2024
Review by Cyril Langston

A Girl Gets Naked In This from St Andrews-based People You Know, is a series of raw monologues about sex from nine young women’s perspectives.

While all of the monologues are broadly about sex, they manage to cover a lot of ground – the good, the bad, and the mohawked.

Each of the nine performers takes to the stage, set as just a simple messy bedroom, one by one to deliver intimate monologues. The scripts, penned by Loulou Sloss, Nicole Sellew, Catherine Barrie, Piper Richardson, and Scarlett Tew, navigate unique perspectives, from violent fantasies to tender love sabotaged by familial pressure.

The experiences shared are a mixture of challenging, funny, and vulnerable. Two of the monologues (Escarlet Johansson by Scarlett Tew and My Ex boyfriend refused to let me say his name during sex by Loulou Sloss) are performed by their writers; the rest are not. Each performer does an excellent job delivering the emotional material and negotiating such poignant works, whether from their own experiences or not.

not predictable

This selection of monologues is refreshing and not predictable; it’s not pushing one narrative of young womanhood, but rather making space for all the variations in between. Neither an abstinence plea nor a free love rallying call, this is a frank and tender window into the lives of young women.
