Thoroughly Modern Tour
Collins, Clifton for Millie tour
Michelle Collins is to join Strictly’s Joanne Clifton in the 2017 tour of Thoroughly Modern Millie, coming to the Edinburgh Playhouse in January.
Collins, known for her ten year stint on Eastenders as Cindy Beale as well as three years behind the bar of Coronation Street’s Rovers Return, will play the role of sinister hotel proprietress Mrs Meers.
The title role in the production will be taken by Strictly Come Dancing professional Joanne Clifton, who is currently partnered with sports presenter Ore Oduba on the BBC 1 show.
Thoroughly Modern Millie follows the fortunes of small-town girl, Millie Dillmount, who escapes to New York in the 1920s, intent on marrying for money not love. Bobbing her hair and raising her hemline, she is soon falling foul of city life on every level.
Based on the 1967 movie of the same name, staring Julie Andrews as Millie, the musical opened on Broadway in 2002, winning six Tony awards, including Best Musical. It goes big on both dancing and singing, from explosive tap numbers to a ‘Fred and Ginger’ dance routine on a window ledge. Featured songs include Gimme Gimme, Thoroughly Modern Millie and Not for the Life of Me.
The tour opens in London in January and is currently scheduled through to June. Michelle Collins is booked to play Mrs Meers through to the dates in York, leaving the tour on Saturday 4 March 2017. Direction and Choreography will be by Racky Plews, with Tom Turner as MD.
