The Forth Act gets Dickensian for Christmas
Edinburgh amateur theatre company The Forth Act, is set to stage an adaptation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol at St Salvador’s Church in Stenhouse in the second week of December 2023.
The company is has put out an open call for performers and will be holding an open audition workshop at The Greyfriars Charteris Centre, 140 The Pleasance, from 4pm to 7pm on Saturday 30 September.
The Forth Act is to stage A Christmas Carol in Stenhouse.
This is the second production from the company, which staged an al-fresco production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream over midsummer, in the Italian Garden of Saughton Park, directed by company AD, Helen Schofield (★★★★☆ Accomplished).
In the call-out for this December’s production the company says: “We’re looking for actors with a can-do attitude, a sense of fun, and a willingness to create something new!”
For the audition workshop there is no need to prepare any specific material, but those who are more comfortable with something rehearsed should prepare a dramatic or comedic monologue, no longer than three minutes in total.
Besides the principal performers the company is looking for an ensemble of carollers and, back stage, for technicians.
For the ensemble of carollers, a group of strong or moderately confident singers is required. There will be some non-sung ensemble roles as well, so all are welcome to audition.
Anyone who would like to join up in a technical role should send a summary of their technical experience as well as what position they would like to fill to forthactdrama@gmail.com. The company is also open to those who would like to gain experience in a technical role they have not previously worked in.
Rehearsals
Rehearsals will take place on Monday and Wednesday evenings, in Stenhouse, starting Monday 9 October. Principles will be expected to attend all rehearsals so need to ensure they can get to Stenhouse on those evenings before committing to a role.
Anyone who would like to audition for a principal role but can’t make workshop on September 30 should send a self-tape with both a comedic and dramatic monologue no longer than three minutes in length, to forthactdrama@gmail.com. They should also include any a resume of their theatre experience.
Those who can’t make the workshop but who is interested in the ensemble, should send an introductory video (without monologues), explaining their vocal experience to the address above. Include a verse of a Christmas tune would be a benefit, if relevant.
The Forth Act point out that this is an amateur and unpaid production. Anyone applying should be 18 years or over. The production will be cast without necessarily holding to the genders expressed in the original text and performers of all backgrounds, sexualities and gender expressions are welcome to audition.
