Sweeney Casting Call
Men wanted for #EdFringe 2017 production
Captivate Theatre has put out details of its auditions for “older” (20-60 year-olds) for its Edinburgh Fringe production of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd.
The production was originally announced in October: Captivating Sweeney. Auditions will take place on Sunday 15 January 2017 at Fettes College, Edinburgh, registration from 9.30am. For more information, or to register interest, email captivatetheatre@gmail.com.
Captivate’s musical director, Tommie Travers, told Æ: “ we’re really seeking older males for the roles of Sweeney Todd, Judge Turpin, Beadle Bamford and Pirelli. All are fantastically eccentric characters – some of the most famous in musical theatre history!”
Hugh Wheeler’s book, based on Christopher Bond’s play, follows wronged barber Benjamin Barker who returns to London after 15 years in a prison hulk in Australia. Reinventing himself as Sweeney Todd, he seeks revenge on the judge who falsely imprisoned him and stole his beautiful young wife.
He famously teams up with Fleet Street pie shop owner Mrs Lovett. When she can’t get enough meat for her pies, he is able to provide her with a regular supply of his murder victims to dispose of – a partnership which works for them both.

Further details of Captivate’s summer school for younger performers will be announced this week.
