November 2020 dates for Playhouse

Craig Revel Horwood is to direct a new tour of Strictly Ballroom – The Musical, playing the Edinburgh Playhouse in November 2020 with tickets now on sale.

Horwood promises “sexy moves, sizzling costumes and a simply sensational evening” from the production, which opens in Nottingham in September 2020

It visits Milton Keynes, Sunderland and Bristol before foxtrotting into the Playhouse for a week from Monday 16 to Saturday 21 November. A further 18 dates of the 36 date tour (see listings), are still to go on sale, including the Glasgow King’s in April 2021 which is on sale from 10am, Fri 6 Dec.

Adapted by Baz Luhrmann from his ferociously successful 1992 movie, the musical had mixed reviews in its 2018 UK debut in London’s West End, when it was directed and choreographed by Drew McOnie.

The new production will be directed by the dancer, choreographer, theatre director, occasional drag artiste and Strictly judge, Horwood, with a cast of over 20 world class performers. Horwood’s most recent productions as joint director and choreographer include Fiddler on the Roof, Son of a Preacher Man and Sister Act.

Horwood said: “I am absolutely delighted to be directing the 2020/21 UK tour of Strictly Ballroom The Musical – it’s going to be fab-u-lous! The theatre is where I come alive and it is there that I feel in my most creative element.

“Having directed the UK Arena Tour of Strictly Come Dancing for the past few years, I simply cannot wait to put my stamp on this iconic and much-loved musical. Expect some sexy moves, sizzling costumes and a simply sensational evening!”

Like the film, the musical follows arrogant and rebellious young ballroom dancer, Scott Hastings. When his radical and daring dance style sees him fall out of favour with the Australian dance Federation, he is forced to dance with beginner, Fran.

Together they find the courage to defy tradition and discover that to win, your steps don’t need to be strictly ballroom…

The production features such break-into-song numbers as Love is in the Air, Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps and Time After Time, as well as several new songs by artists including Sia, David Foster and Eddie Perfect.
