Springfield King’s
Dusty Springfield musical for King’s
Son of A Preacher Man, the new musical featuring songs made famous by Dusty Springfield with direction and choreography by Craig Revel Horwood, has booked Autumn dates at the King’s.
The musical, which has a book by Warner Brown, opens at the Churchill Theatre in Bromley in September and will arrive in Edinburgh on Tuesday October 17 for a five night run.
Horwood is no stranger to directing and choreographing. He did so for Sister Act coming to the Playhouse for a fortnight in April.
Horwood told Æ that he will be casting the six principals for the 26 week tour of Preacher Man in April. With a company of between 16 and 20, he said he will be looking to develop the show in the rehearsal room.
“It is a wonderful story,” Horwood told Æ. “It is all Dusty’s music. Unlike a jukebox musical, it really does touch you and hit your heart.
“It’s not like Mama Mia in the way the songs are crowbarred into the story: this just mellifluously plays through. Which is just lovely and it is a love story.”
Swinging joint
According to the official release, Brown’s plot revolves around the memories and myths of the Preacher Man, a swinging joint in 1960s Soho where the kids danced the night away to the latest crazes and dared to dream of love. There, the legendary owner, the Preacher Man himself, dispensed advice to cure the loneliest of hearts.
Now, three three random strangers, generations apart but all in need of help with their hopeless love lives, are inexplicably drawn to the site of the original venue.
The Preacher Man is long gone, but is that his son? How spooky is that! And with help from the wonderful Cappuccino Sisters, he might just find it in himself to channel the spirit of The Preacher Man and once more give these three lovesick strangers the look of love.
Dusty Springfield’s big hits used in the show include The Look Of Love, I Only Want To Be With You, Spooky and, of course, the classic Son Of A Preacher Man. Dates beyond December 2017 have yet to be announced.
