Some Enchanted Evening
Rodgers & Hammerstein focus for Ed’s G&S outfit
The Edinburgh Gilbert and Sullivan Society is focussing on a different pairing than usual for its summer concert outing at St Andrew’s and St George’s West Church on George Street this Saturday 9 June 2018.
In The Sound of Their Music, the company will be performing nothing but the works of Rodgers & Hammerstein in a concert that it is repeating for the Fringe, two months later on Saturday 4 August in the same venue.
EdGAS’s started life as an exclusively Gilbert and Sullivan outfit in 1946, staging an operetta by them every Spring since. It was not until 2015 that the company staged its first non-G&S production, in an Autumn production at the Church Hill theatre.
This was Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific and something about the pairing seems to have got under the company’s skin as it returned with Oklahoma! last year (after a brief flirtation with Me and My Girl in 2016).
“EDGAS are now turning their attention on the greatest musical theatre partnership after G&S,” the company’s artistic director Alan Borthwick told Æ. “Namely the wonderful Rodgers & Hammerstein.
“The concert will contain items from each of their joint works – including their three relative failures, Me and Juliet, Pipe Dream and the seriously under-rated Allegro, a work that first inspired Stephen Sondheim to write musicals.
well-known numbers
“We’ll also be including all the well-known numbers such as Some Enchanted Evening, If I loved You and, of course, the title song from Oklahoma!.”
After the two concert performances the company is breaking out yet another well-known musical theatre pairing as it returns to the Church Hill in October for a production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s 1970s rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar.
The named roles have all been cast with Garry Hall in the title role, Paul Lyall as Judas and Cara Blaikie as Mary. However, the company says that it is still particularly keen to hear from any men who might be interested in joining the cast of this modern classic.
The company will return to the King’s in March 2019 for a run of The Mikado.
