Southern Light announce team for 2017 production
Edinburgh’s oldest theatre company has announced that its 120th production will be Titanic The Musical, playing the King’s in February 2017.
The company will be augmenting its current production team with Graeme Shield joining as assistant director to Andy Johnston. David McFarlane will once again MD, assisted by Andrew Thomson and Louise Williamson will choreograph the production.
First staged on Broadway in 1997, when it won five Tony Awards including best musical, Titanic The Musical is based on the stories of real individuals who both survived and died in the tragedy in the early hours of 15 April 1912.
Written by Maury Yeston and Peter Stone, it was originally inspired by the discovery of the wreck of the RMS Titanic in 1985, which set Yeston considering how the catastrophe levelled the differing aspirations of the different classes of passengers on board the White Star Liner.
Although SLO is still considering a cast of over 60 people – the original Broadway production had a cast of 37, many of whom doubled – the show will present very different challenges to the company that has become known in recent years for the large casts it brings to the stage.
monumental
Director Andy Johnston said: “It is a monumental piece of theatre and is very well suited to both the musical and dramatic strengths of this great company. There are not many ‘sung-through’ musicals performed on the amateur scene these days and we are more than up for the challenge.
“In order to do full justice to Titanic and her 1,517 lost souls, we are striving to put together a top-notch cast and technical team to mount a suitably large scaled production that will dazzle and move our audience in equal measure.”
To help rise to that challenge, the company is adding Graeme Shield to the production team. Shield has experience in short-film and theatre direction as well as working with many amateur companies in Fife. He is currently AD with the Edinburgh Playhouse Stage Experience.
Rehearsals for Titanic The Musical will begin in September. Southen Light told Æ that details of how to join the company and audition for the show will be announced “in due course”.
