Sasquatch Casting Call
Faith No More founder looking for #EdFringe singers
Roddy Bottum, the film composer and founding member of Faith No More, has put out a casting call for his new experimental work, Sasquatch The Opera, at Edinburgh Fringe 2017.
Musical direction for the production will be by VictoriaFalconer-Pritchard who will be appearing at the production alongside Bottum. The show is produced by Civil Disobedience and will be playing at Summerhall from Wednesday 2 to Sunday 27 August 2017
With the main roles cast, the call is for performers who will be in Edinburgh during the fringe to take part in the chorus. According to the calling notice, auditionees need to be competent (but not necessarily trained) singers, and keen to push themselves towards the avant-garde. Artists must be available 8.30-10.30pm nightly and per diems will be paid – but no accommodation will be provided.
The company are looking to cast two baritones or basses, two tenors and two altos – these are non-gender specific roles.
The show is described as:”a drug-fuelled and surreal take on the tale of the Sasquatch – a tragic myth retold, in which Bottum holds a mirror up to his own experience as the first openly gay man in the extremely macho world of rock and roll.”
The story revolves around a backwoods family who make a living selling the story of the Sasquatch to willing tourists, and what happens when they come across the real monster.
Bottum says: “The impetus for my opera is a theme I’m particularly fond of – that of the misunderstood monster. I reference the Elephant Man, Frankenstein, King Kong and a 100lb four-year-old I once saw on Jerry Springer as characters of inspiration.
“It’s not your typical opera and I’m looking for unorthodox creatively adventurous types, even newcomers to the world of theatre. I am definitely seeking a queer-friendly cast as culturally and racially diverse as possible.”
Civil Disobedience is also auditioning musicians to make up a small ensemble. Bottum will be playing along with the MD Victoria Falconer-Pritchard. The company now need a timpani player and two trumpets or french horns. Artists must be available 8.30-10.30pm nightly and a negotiable show fee will be paid, but no accommodation will be provided.
Live auditions will be held in London for both singers and musicians on Monday 5 June 2017, but filmed audition clips will also be accepted. Anyone interested in the production should send expressions of interest and supporting materials to hello@victoriafalconerpritchard.com stating ‘Sasquatch Ensemble’ in the header.
