Playhouse to reopen
Venue sets September 5 opening date
The Edinburgh Playhouse is to reopen at full capacity on Sunday 5 September 2021 – after 536 days of being dark – with two performances of Shagged, Married, Annoyed with Chris & Rosie Ramsey.
The reopening follows the Scottish Government’s recent announcement removing all legal restrictions for social distancing in venues – although all patrons will still have to wear face coverings – and a capacity dispensation for the 3,059 seat venue from the Edinburgh City Council.
Following Shagged, Married Annoyed – for which there are a handful of seats left for both performances – the Playhouse will get back to musicals business on Tuesday 14 September with a gala performance of Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 the Musical, which runs to Saturday 18 September.
Colin Marr, Theatre Director at the Edinburgh Playhouse said “I am absolutely thrilled to be able to reopen our theatre doors after more than 500 days of closure. It has been a very difficult time for everyone and to be given the go ahead to reopen this iconic venue, is an incredible feeling.
“I can’t wait to welcome back my full team, our wonderful audience members and the incredible gigs, comedians and musicals that we’ve all missed so much this last year and a half.”
proof of Covid status
The Ambassador Theatre Group which owns the Playhouse says that “once audiences have purchased tickets, they will be contacted just ahead of their visit to confirm the details of what they can expect, so that they can be confident that venues will be operating in accordance with the most up-to-date guidelines.”
This includes mandatory face coverings in Scotland, eTickets, the option of refreshments delivered to seats, contactless payments and hand sanitiser stations.
In addition statutory guidance, ATG is asking all over 18 audience members for proof of Covid status – which is either full vaccination or negative test within 48 hours. It has introduced additional safety measures at the Edinburgh Playhouse including staggered arrival times and designated entry points.
