Creative Electric call-out for new night
Leith-based Creative Electric theatre company has put out a call for performers to take part in an event, Working Class Exotica – at Leith Dockers Club on 9 June 2019.
The company is looking to programme five performances by artists who identify as working, benefit or under class “to perform alongside our in-house radges”. The deadline is May 21.
Creative Electric is an award winning, working class company based in Leith. It creates socio-political live art and performance with and for people who may not traditionally attend arts events.
Defining working class exotica as “objects considered interesting because they are out of the ordinary, foreign, not of the norm” the company says that it has noticed a trend for putting poverty porn onstage, for middle class artists to tell others’ stories.
They say: “So we’ve decided to programme a space for working, benefit and under class artists to share their work. A space where everyone is welcome. No airs or graces. No extortionate ticket prices. Just cheap pints and a friendly space where all artists are paid for their work.
“Working Class Exotica is a space to take risks, experiment with failure and connect with new audiences.”
five performances
Creative Electric is looking to programme up to five performances, each up to ten minutes in length. These can be spoken word, live art, dance, music, comedy, drag, a scene from a new play you’re working on… anything that the performer wants to share with an audience.
Each performer will receive £50 plus travel expenses.
To apply please email Creative Electric with a little about yourself, where you’re based and the work you’d like to share including any videos or images of the work.
“We’re happy to receive this in the format that works best for you, whether thats a video, audio recording or written. Send us photos though. We love photos.”
Working Class Exotica will take place at Leith Dockers Club on Sunday 9 June 7-10pm.
Please note this opportunity is only for artists who identify as working, benefit or under class. “Nae poshos.”
