Mack the Knife audition
Black Bat open call for #EdFringe musical
Black Bat Productions has put out an open call for its 2017 #EdFringe production of Nathaniel Brimmer-Beller’s, darkly glistening Mack the Knife.
Based on the song by Kurt Weil and Burtolt Brecht, the hour-long show follows a jazz singer in late 1950s London who is recruited by a caustic detective to hunt down a local killer.
Behind them, a jazz trio fill in the music – and flesh out the occasional necessary extra character.
Brimmer-Beller told Æ that it was the tone of the song which drew him to use Mack the Knife as his inspiration.
“I found the charming nature of the melody coupled with the jarringly violent imagery and storyline fascinating,” he said. “It has always been a dark, pulpy jaunt celebrating a serial killer
“After watching and listening to numerous performances through the years, Ella Fitzgerald’s from Live in Berlin remains my favourite, and the inspiration for most of the play’s tone. I realised that it hits many of the tones I have always enjoyed reading, watching, and writing.”
The company had a successful two-night try-out of the show at the Bedlam in January and is now taking it to the fringe where it will run during the last two weeks. Rehearsals will take place in late July.
The company is looking to cast the two lead roles.
Lady: A female Jazz singer with plenty of attitude. She has to deliver the jazz standards with style and auditionees should prepare and short excerpt from a jazz-style song for their audition.
Foster: Casting for the detective will be gender blind. This is your hard-boiled role and the actor who gets the part needs to be able to deliver their lines in the classic noir style with real conviction.
Auditions will take place on Tuesday 4 April 2017, 6-8pm and Wednesday 5 at 4-7pm in room 7.01 David Hume Tower. Callbacks will take place on Thursday 6 in the early evening (location TBC).
To book a ten minute audition slot send an email to producer.blackbat@gmail.com. State your preferred date and time and which part you wish to read and you will be sent the audition excerpts.
