Lyceum Youth Call Out
Open call for Seven Against Edinburgh
The Lyceum’s youth theatre has put out an open call for a dozen young people aged 16 to 21 for its production of Becky Hope-Palmer’s new play with songs, Seven Against Edinburgh, to be staged in April 2022.
The play takes its inspiration from the story of the Edinburgh Seven who were the first female students to be matriculated in any British University. It follows a group of teenage girls as they discover the story of these inspirational women.
There are twelve roles available for people aged 16-21 in the play, which will be directed by Hope-Palmer with the Lyceum’s creative learning officer Sophie Howell. Musical direction will be by Sofia Kherroubi-Garcia.
Nine of the roles are for female-identifying actor-musicians to take on a range of lead and supporting performance roles. The remaining three are learning roles for young creatives of any gender who are looking to gain experience working with professionals on a studio show – such as movement directors, dramaturgs and stage managers.
Becky Hope-Palmer said of the project: “Seven Against Edinburgh has young people at its heart. We want to create a production full of energy and revolution, putting female tenacity and friendship at the centre.
“It will provide the unique opportunity to train in live theatre performance (or as a creative team). You do not have to have prior experience to be a part of this show, just a passion for telling big stories. You will be part of shaping the production and its performance in the Lyceum’s exciting studio space.”
all abilities and experience are encouraged
The Lyceum says those auditioning for the actor-musician roles must be confident singing and may be able to play an instrument, but otherwise applicants of all abilities and level of experience are encouraged to apply, including people with little or no performance experience.
There will be an emphasis on professional development, with each role designed to provide young people with rich learning opportunities, training, and insight into the creative process, and the opportunities are crafted for those young people not attending drama schools.
Applicants must be aged 16-21 on or by 1 January 2022. Auditions will be held in a friendly, supportive group environment and will involve a mixture of script work, singing and improvising with instruments.
Auditions are completely free, with no preparation needed. Anyone wishing to audition who would benefit from additional support – such as physical access, neurodiversity or mental health requirements – should reach out in advance to ensure their needs are adequately met in advance of auditions.
