Lead cast for & Juliet announced
International Women’s Day announcement for Playhouse dates
The three leads have been announced for the UK tour of & Juliet, the jukebox musical which imagines a theatrical universe where Juliet ditches her famous ending with Romeo.
Newcomer Gerardine Sacdalan will star as Juliet with Sandra Marvin as her nurse, Angélique. Lara Denning will play Anne Hathaway who rewrites her husband’s original play after seeing its opening night. & Juliet hits the Playhouse this November 2024 (Tue 12 – Sat 16: tickets here) after a fortnight at the Glasgow King’s in August (Tue 12 – Sat 23: tickets here).
& Juliet follows Anne Hathaway and hubby Bill Shakespeare as they argue and rewrite his most famous tragedy. In Anne’s new version, Juliet leaves her past behind to travel to Paris with her nurse Angelique and new friends May and April – aka Anne, who has written herself into the story.
With a book by David West Read, best known for the 17 episodes he wrote for hit Canadian sitcom Schitt’s Creek, the musical features songs by Swedish musician Max Martin, possibly best known for his association with Britney Spear’s writing her first single, …Baby one more time and several more.
Gerardine Sacdalan graduated from Urdang Academy this year and starred in Made In Dagenham In Concert at the London Palladium.
Credits
Sandra Marvin is known for playing TV’s Jessie Grant/Dingle in Emmerdale and Patricia Williams in Call the Midwife. Currently playing Becky in Waitress on the West End, other musical theatre credits include Deloris Van Cartier in Sister Act The Musical and Miss Motormouth Maybelle in Hairspray.
Marvin also performed with Kate Bush in her sold-out Before The Dawn concerts in 2016, and featured on the live album of the same name. She sings the title track on the Grammy award winning soundtrack for the George Clooney and Sandra Bullock film, Gravity.
Lara Denning’s West End theatre credits include standby Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard, Mrs Wormwood and Miss Honey in Matilda, Miss Hedge in Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, Doreen/Miss Elf in The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 ¾ and Mrs Bucket in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
& Juliet is directed by Luke Sheppard and choreographed by Jennifer Weber. Bill Sherman is responsible for musical supervision, orchestrations and arrangements of such Max Martin songs as Since U Been Gone, It’s My Life, I Want It That Way, Can’t Stop the Feeling! and Katy Perry’s Roar.
Further casting will be announced at a later date.
