Casting call for amateur immersive project
Edinburgh grassroots company Butt-In Productions has put out a casting call for The Man Who Shouldn’t Be Here, its prison-set immersive production taking place at the Biscuit Factory in November.
The production is: “an immersive theatrical experience all based on one man’s experience of alcoholism, incarceration and fish”, according to producer Steph Smart who will be auditioning for a variety of roles this Sunday, 2 October 2016.
The immersive project has a strong narrative centre, based on the experiences of Bruce Budge, who was an inmate of the Scottish Prison Service during the 1980s. The focus is on the struggles faced by both the screws and cons in an environment that ultimately creates as many problems as it attempts to solve.
Budge was released from prison in 1992 and has been sober for 25 years. He wrote the piece with Kenny MacLeod.
The production is being staged at the Biscuit Factory on Anderson place. On entering the space the audience will experience a processing similar to that which occurs when you are put in prison. Some cast members will be part of this. There will also be guards present throughout who will essentially double up as a front of house team.
The company are looking to cast ten named roles, with male and female characters ranging in ages from early twenties and fifties. There are an additional five to eight male prisoner roles which will require good improvisational skills as they will be responsible for engaging the audience in the production.
There are also four additional, un-named guards, male or female aged 20 to 60, who will be the crux of the whole performance. They will be responsible for ensuring the audience and actors comply at all times and need to be able to be intimidating alongside being clear communicators.
