Hothouse shows 2015
Grassroots companies in Trav Showcase
Four of Edinburgh’s newer and innovative grassroots companies are staging works as part of this year’s Hothouse season at the Traverse this week – Tue 10 – Fri 13 November 2015.
The four pieces are at varying stages of development, but all feature companies and individuals who have provided exciting work over the last year or so.

Opening the season is Amy Gilmartin’s Urban Fox company, with Dave Fargnoli’s Heartlands which got excellent reviews during this year’s Edinburgh fringe (Click here for Æ’s review). Which is little surprise from this consistently compelling company.
On Wednesday, Wasting My Womb sees Heather Marshall, who has been behind plenty of pieces of innovative work with her Creative Electric young company, striking out with her own piece.
The ever-excellent Melanie Jordan and Caitlin Skinner return with At A Stretch on Thursday. Their previous work together Sanitise was a huge critical success (click here for Æ’s review). Produced in association with Gunshow Theatre, it a very early work-in-progress performance of their new show for young people about two women who fall in love.
The final night sees Trig Point Theatre bring, Capital Converse, another piece by Mikey Burnett. This Leith-set comedy follows the success of last year’s Lace Up. (Here’s Æ’s review of Lace Up).
Trained in Edinburgh
Urban Fox’s Amy Gilmartin told Æ: “I’m really happy that the Traverse are continuing to support our work, and that three of the four directors are not only female, but also all trained in Edinburgh.
“We all studied Drama and Theatre Arts at QMU (a course that doesn’t exist any more), all in different years. I actually didn’t know either at university, but it is good that Scottish training is being represented too!”
Executive Producer and Joint CEO of the Traverse, Linda Crooks, said: “We believe that by nourishing Edinburgh’s creative talents and offering support to take artistic risk, we can help grow a confident and ambitious grassroots theatre culture.
“Our common goal is to produce some of the best and most challenging new work for the Edinburgh audience, for the Traverse, and develop theatre for the audiences of the future at home and abroad.”

When things fall apart, you go back home. Swept up in a public scandal, jaded humanitarian Charlie rehashes the past and hashtags his way to the moral high ground. Dark, daft and subversive, Heartlands asks if optimism always has to break your heart. Features music by Rebecca Herd and is directed by Amy Gilmartin.

Wasting My Womb
Wednesday 11 November 2015: 8pm.
Heather Marshall
“I am 34. I am female. I have no children. I was told that I am a waste of a womb. This was meant as a compliment as I am good with children. I’m just going to leave that here…. I am a waste of a womb.” Heather will direct the piece which examines the societal pressures experienced by women all over the world.

Capital Converse

Trig Point Theatre
It’s a bitterly cold December night in Edinburgh. Twenty-somethings Frank and Malky are in their flat at the foot of Leith Walk. Malky’s been kicked off the dole and is reeling from being dumped. He is, however, about to discover that his best pal Frank may have had something to do with his current desperate state.
