EdFringe lockdown memories: Day One

The #NothingToReviewHere and #SomethingToReview projects

In the eerily fallow Fringe of 2020 and weirdly hybrid event of the following year, The Dibdin Brothers, Thom & Peter, published a daily image from around Edinburgh.

These projects – #NothingToReviewHere and #SomethingToReview – showed the Edinburgh Fringe as it had never been seen before. And in that first year, when everyone had to stay at home, provided a surrogate fringe for its fans to witness from afar. There is an introduction to the projects here: #NothingToReviewHere.

This year, over the course of EdFringe 2024, we are publishing the images and words from the respective days of 2020 and 2021.

#EdFringe2020 Day 1:  Peter Dibdin and I were there.

I wore my reviewing kit: pen, bike & loud shirt.
He wore a hat and and a camera.

I did some posing. He took some pics.

There were no crowds, no street performers, no pitches.
No one stopped to give us a flyer.

#EdFringe2021 Day 1: Peter Dibdin & I were there.
One year on from our #NothingToReviewHere documentation of the fallow Edinburgh Festival Fringe we were back for the new, #Hybrid version.

Pete took some pics.
I wore my reviewing kit. Again.

Busy.
Tourists and locals.
Stressed Street Performers, getting ready to work the crowd. Camera crews hunting a story.
Stalls ready for business.
Here were crowds and street performers, lanyards and facemasks.
Police in soft rain.

Still no flyers though.
Faint smell of Fringe.
