EdFringe lockdown memories: Day Five

The #NothingToReviewHere and #SomethingToReview projects

In the eerily fallow Fringe of 2020 and weirdly hybrid event of the following year, The Dibdin Brothers, Thom & Peter, published a daily image from around Edinburgh.

These projects – #NothingToReviewHere and #SomethingToReview – showed the Edinburgh Fringe as it had never been seen before. And in that first year, when everyone had to stay at home, provided a surrogate fringe for its fans to witness from afar. There is an introduction to the projects here: #NothingToReviewHere.

This year, over the course of EdFringe 2024, we are publishing the images and words from the respective days of 2020 and 2021.

It was on day five of the Fallow Fringe that this series really kicked off on Facebook and Twitter… There is nothing like a photobombing dog to up your engagement! This first image of Lambchop (as I now know him to be) really is a dog, and not a lama.

In 2021 things got a bit out of sequence. The corresponding Meadows pic is actually day seven. But I think the go well together… Besides, it’s the same shirt!  We moved up to the junction of Melville Drive and Summerhall Crescent, usually cordoned off with EdFringe posters, but in 2021 the poster site was somewhat bare.

Fallow EdFringe. Day 5: Peter Dibdin and I were there.

No Underbelly’s Circus Hub on the Meadows.

No bikes & buggies against the railings. No railings. No sweaty turns chatting with their audiences post show.

(No Lady Boys of Bangkok for that matter – for those with longer memories!)

Dogs. Dogwalkers. Barbecue-burned grass. Grass. Long grass.
A misty day: the sky low, pregnant with as yet unleashed thunder.

This photobombing dog was having a dance… No idea who it is, though.

Hybrid EdFringe Day 7: Peter Dibdin and I were there.

Meadows east end
The pooch’s poo park Not hidden by posters.
No weel-kent faces for Jack to pee against.
Just a tree.

Jack has his space back
It smells of freshly mown grass.

This year’s posters are hiding by the road
All three of them.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe lino-cut of Edinburgh.
Simon Thacker’s Made In Scotland Show at Summerhall.
The ever-present Lady Boys of Bangkok.

By chance, Chris Grady is passing by.
We stop to exchange opinions.
Shows and venues lauded or rejected in hurried sentences.
Jack and I like this Hybrid fringe.
