Dario Fo cancels festival appearance due to illness

Dario Fo, the Italian Nobel Prize-winning playwright, has had to cancel his planned personal appearance at the Lyceum, which was to have taken place this Sunday, 9 October 2016.

In an email sent to ticket holders today, Wednesday 5, producing company Eleven say that: “Dario Fo is unwell and not able to make the journey to Edinburgh.”

They do not say what nature the 90 year-old Fo’s ill-health takes, although he had to postpone a personal appearance in Rome earlier this year at short notice due to ill health. His Edinburgh appearance will not be rearranged and ticket holders should contact the Lyceum box office to arrange a refund.

Fo was to have been in conversation with his biographer and translator Joe Farrell as part of Dancing with Colours, Whipping with Words, the festival celebrating Fo and his influence on popular political theatre in Scotland.

The rest of the festival is to continue as planned. Events include Fo’s close friend and former apprentice, Mario Pirovano, performing Fo’s monologue Francis the Holy Jester at the Scottish Storytelling Centre on Saturday 8 October and two talks about Fo’s life and influence – Encounters with Fo on Friday 7 October and Dario Fo and Political Theatre in Scotland on Wednesday 13 October.

Rupert Thomson, Artistic Director of Eleven said “Although we are sad not to see Dario in Edinburgh, our main concern is of course for his health. Our thoughts are with him and his family and we hope he is up and about again soon.

“In the meantime, we hope that our festival will do a good job of celebrating Dario and his influence and enabling audiences in Scotland to see a bit more of his work.”
