Eden Court boss takes on theatre director role

Colin Marr has been appointed as theatre director at Edinburgh Playhouse, returning to Edinburgh after 20 years as chief executive at Eden Court, Inverness.

Marr will be joining the venue in October, replacing general manager Deborah Newman, who left in May to take on the role of visitor experience director at the V&A Museum of Design Dundee.

As chief executive at Eden Court, Marr was responsible for the venue’s £23 million capital development, which transformed the under-achieving venue into the largest multi-venue arts centre in Scotland when it was completed in 2007.

The venue’s chairman Jane Gill said: “Under Colin’s leadership, Eden Court has become a leading force in the theatre world, developing a programme which achieves the highest per capita attendance of any UK theatre.”

Marr was previously the theatre and commercial manager at the Traverse for five years from 1992 and Hall Manager at the Queens Hall for four years from 1988, after graduating from Edinburgh University.

Commenting on his new role, Colin said, “I’m very excited to be returning to the capital and look forward to working with the team in this iconic Edinburgh Theatre, which plays host to world-leading touring productions, as well as being a key venue for Festival and Fringe seasons.”
