Captivate Casting Call
Adults and young male voices sought for EdFringe runs
Captivate Theatre has put out a general casting call, but with an emphasis on adult roles and boys (19 and under), for its Edinburgh Fringe 2016 productions.
The local amateur company will once again be programming the daytime performances in the Famous Spiegeltent in St Andrew Square. This year’s musicals are Sunshine on Leith and Oliver!, as well as the Schools edition of Les Misérables and a summerschool production of Bugsy Malone.
Auditions for the different productions will take place at Fettes College on Sundays the 17, 24 and 31 of January 2016.
Tommie Travers who is musical director of Captivate Theatre told Æ that beside putting out a general casting call for the productions, the company is particularly concerned to attract auditionees in two specific areas.
He said: “We’re in a desperate need of talented boys between 16 and 19 to take part in our production of Les Mis. We were very lucky last year to have such a strong group of boys, but a lot of them are now too old.
“We’ve been flooded with applications from girls – so we could really do with a push when it comes to recruiting boys. We’re asking them to ‘Join the revolution’!”
The performing licence for Les Mis Schools Edition stipulates that all performers must be 19 or under at the time of performance and be at school, have just left school or at college. Unfortunately, those who are already at university cannot be considered.
age appropriate performers
The company is also struggling to find age appropriate performers for the principal adult roles in Sunshine on Leith (Ally, Davy, Liz, Yvonne and Jean), and the roles of Fagin, Sykes, Nancy, Mr Bumble, Widow Corny and Mr & Mrs Sowerberry for Oliver!.
Travers continued: “I think over the years, we’ve got the reputation of being a youth theatre. Whilst we are passionate about our drama classes and giving youngsters great opportunities, we are ultimately a theatre company, and everyone is welcome.
“That’s what we want the wider community to know. Young or old – there are parts for you!”.
There are also roles available for youngsters (particularly boys) in Oliver!, both in the chorus and the principal roles.
Rehearsals take place from 11 July 2016, and any successful applicant would need to be flexible in their availability for rehearsals. Performances take place throughout August at The Famous Spiegeltent in St Andrew Square.

Auditions have been set for the following dates and times, although Travers told Æ that the company should be able to see people for all productions on the 24th and 31st.
