Canine casting call
Pup Idol search for Legally Blonde dog duo
The Bohemians Lyric Opera Company has put out a canine casting call for two dogs to star in Legally Blonde, taking place at the King’s theatre this March 2016.
Calling the hunt Pup Idol, the local amateur company is searching for a Bruiser and a Rufus – the two dogs who play an integral part of the story that sees Elle Woods swap her designer handbag and sorority lifestyle for a place at Harvard Law School.
The dogs will be expected to take part in a short audition this Saturday, 30 January 2016, with members of the cast and production team. They will need to display the necessary discipline, obedience and star quality to claim the roles.
Owners who would like their dogs to take part in Pup Idol will have to be sharp, however, as both actresses playing the dog-owning roles are already keeping their eyes peeled for the right hound.
“I cornered someone on the Meadows the other day,” Lydia Carrington who plays Elle, owner of Bruiser, admited to Æ. “I said ‘We are looking for a Chihuahua and you have two!’.”
Lyndsey McGhee, who is playing Elle’s confidante the hairdresser Paulette, and owner of Rufus, added that her best friend has a Burmese mountain dog who is in the running for the part.

Jon Cuthbertson, who is directing the produciton explained the kind of dogs he is on the lookout for.
“For Bruiser we are looking for a small handbag-style dog,” he said. “We have had a Pomeranian interested and they have sent some photos in. We are willing to open it out to any designer-look dog that can be a cute little handbag dog.”
The emphasis is on character rather than looks for Rufus, according to Cuthbertson.
“When we come to Rufus the goals are wide open,” he said. “We can have anything, basically. It is traditionally a bulldog, but we are willing to take a big dog, a fluffy dog, one that is funny: we are looking for character more than anything else.”
Anyone can register to enter their dog for the auditions by emailing pupidol@bohemians.org.uk. The auditions will take place in Edinburgh on Saturday 30 January 2016, between 2pm and 5pm.
