Bohemians Bounce Back
Rainbows all over from Bohemians
Edinburgh’s Bohemian’s have been recording all over the world for their latest production, A Bohemians Rainbow, which will be broadcast through the EdFringe online platform for five days only.
Well, not quite over all the world, but at least as far away as Hungary, as the amateur musical company seeks to find a substitute for its usual Edinburgh fringe concert performances, as a way of keeping up the momentum ahead of their planned King’s performances of Shrek, in the early Spring.
“Our 2020 show was one week out from heading into The King’s Theatre when lockdown hit,” remembers Kirsty Tomassi, Bohemians’ Chairman of the company’s first attempt to stage the musical based on the 2001 Dreamworks movie. “The cast were devastated that after 6 months of rehearsal we weren’t able to perform to an audience.
“It’s been 18 months since then and we really wanted to give us all something fun to work on, which is where the fringe concert came in.”
The concert is themed around colours, as the company sing their way through the rainbow with a mixture of ballads, country, rock and “everything in between” from shows including In the Heights, Little Shop of Horrors, Wicked and Evita.
“We made sure to follow all the Covid guidelines, meaning that the sound recording was done in very small groups, with some being recorded at home,” continues Tomassi. “This meant that some of the cast’s technical skills have definitely developed over the past two months.
“We even had one of the cast recording herself in Hungary so she could take part!”
something special
The uncertainty of Covid regulations meant that a full scale concert appeared unlikely, what with the problems of large numbers gathering together in one place. The first inkling outsiders had that the company had EdFringe plans came in July, with the announcement it had “spent this weekend recording something special”.
Tomassi told Æ: “Restrictions recently relaxing allowed us to get together in a small group to film which was great fun. Overall it means the audience will get to see an eclectic mix of halls, churches, some gorgeous outdoor scenes and some glimpses into some of our homes as we perform A Bohemian Rainbow.”
The recording will be broadcast through the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society’s online player from Thursday 26 to Monday 30 August 2021. A ticket to view will cost £7.50 and is available through the EdFringe website.
