Beam Theatre Open Audition
Open call for In Love and Warcraft
Edinburgh’s youngest amateur company, Beam Theatre, is holding open auditions for its next production, In Love and Warcraft, to be staged in February 2016.
Madhuri Shekar won the 2013/14 Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Contest for the script. A comedy, it concerns nerdie Evie Malone – gamer girl, college senior and confirmed virgin – who has life figured out.
Not only does Evie command a top-ranked guild in Warcraft with her online boyfriend, she also makes a little cash on the side writing love letters for people who’ve screwed up their relationships. Love is like Warcraft, after all. It’s all about strategies, game plans, and not taking stupid risks.
Well, that’s what she thinks… until she actually falls for a guy. In Real Life. And no amount of gaming expertise will help her out when she finds herself with a non-virtual, totally real, and incredibly cute boyfriend, who wants more from her than she’s willing to give.
This is the second production from Beam Theatre after their production of I Hate Hamlet earlier this year.
Auditions for the six strong cast will be held on September 24 and 25 at 21 George Square, Edinburgh, EH8 9LD. Scenes to read will be provided at the audition. Auditionees should contact the company through the event facebook page or the contact form on their website.
The company is also looking for a “very creative costume designer” who might want to come on board for the production, which includes scenes set inside the Warcraft universe.
Rehearsals will be Monday and Thursday evenings, with a break over Christmas. The show will be performed February 4 to 6, 2016 at the Assembly Roxy.
Character Descriptions
Evie – (playing age early 20s) Protagonist, college senior, and a bit of a geek. Helps others with their relationships, but hasn’t quite figured out how to have one herself. Loves World of Warcraft.
Ryan – (playing age early to mid 20s) Fellow World of Warcraft Guild member. Evie’s kind-of (virtual) boyfriend who doesn’t understand why that’s not enough.
Kitty – (playing age early 20s) Evie’s roommate and best friend. Enjoys dating and sex, and is trying to convince Evie to give them a try. Not a World of Warcraft player.
Raul – (playing age early to mid 20s) The love interest. Falls for Evie, but struggles to come to grips with her inexperience and love of Warcraft.
There are also roles for two very versatile performers (one man and one woman) playing a variety of smaller characters that appear throughout the show. This will be a great challenge for performers who love to create new and different characters.
