After a month of fringe and celebration of Edinburgh’s own theatre makers it’s time to get back to the big stage with the arrival of Take That musical, Greatest Days, at the Playhouse.
Lightning Ridge
★★★★☆ Evocative
Lightning Ridge, Catherine Wheels’ adaptation of Pobby and Dingan, Ben Rice’s novella for young people, is a remarkably involved piece of storytelling about imagination, loss and the nature of community.
Hamlet / Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead by Tom Stoppard
★★★☆☆ Pacy and ★★★★☆ Slick
New Edinburgh amateur company Necessary Cat make their debut performances for the last week only of the fringe with the elegantly twinned pairing of Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.
Little Women
★★★★★ Knowing
Little Women sees Bare productions return for a second show this Fringe with another entertaining a well thought-out musical that features a top notch cast and clever direction in a limited space.
A Midsummer Dream in Auld Reekie
★★★☆☆ Moonshine
Leitheatre give a bold and entertaining performance of John Archer’s new Scots language play, A Midsummer Dream in Auld Reekie, at St Serf’s for the first two weeks of the Fringe.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
★★★★★ Rings out
Captivate Theatre step out of their usual comfort zone of large-cast sure-fire banger hits with this production of lesser performed musical The Hunchback of Notre Dame and find themselves with, well, a sure-fire banger hit.
