Addams Family for Festival Theatre
Festival Theatre gets UK Premiere of Addams Family
Bah da, da-dum. [Snap, snap]! The professional UK premiere of the Addams Family musical is to open its tour at the Festival Theatre in April 2017.
One the “funniest and craziest pieces of musical theatre you will ever come across”, the show has a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice (of Jersey Boys fame) with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa, based on the characters created by Charles Addams.
Casting for the show has yet to be announced, although Matthew White, who directed the recent UK tour of The Producers, been named as director. It follows the tribulations of Wednesday Addams, that ultimate princess of darkness, who has grown up and has a shocking secret that only Gomez knows
Wednesday has fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. Now the whole Addams Family – Uncle Fester, Lurch, Pugsley et al must host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.
This is a co-production between United Theatrical, Aria Entertainment and Music & Lyrics Limited, the company run byJohn Stalker, the former chief executive of the Festival and King’s.
John Stalker told Æ: “I am delighted that we have been entrusted with creating the UK and Ireland premiere production of The Addams Family by authors Andrew Lippa, Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice. I am especially delighted to be opening the show in Edinburgh and at the wonderful Festival Theatre.
anticipated
“I grew up with the TV series and many have discovered the story through the celebrated film. The stage show is one of the funniest and craziest pieces of musical theatre you will ever come across. It’s arrival in the UK is much anticipated and Scotland can be in the front row on opening night.”
Although this is the UK professional premiere of the show, Edinburgh has seen a few amateur productions including from MGA at the King’s (in 2014, click here for review) and Eusog at the Pleasance (in 2015, review here). The RCS also brought a production to the fringe a few years ago.
The original Broadway production, starring Nathan Lane as Gomez and Bebe Neuwirth as Morticia, opened in April 2010 and ran for just under two years at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. The current tour is slated to run until September 2017, with more dates due to be added to those listed below.
