Addams Family Cast
It’s Womack for Morticia
Samantha Womack, currently playing tragic Ronnie Mitchell in Eastenders, is to play Morticia Adams in the newly extended UK tour of The Addams Family musical.
As previously reported, the production will open its tour at the Festival theatre on Thursday 20 April 2017. Also announced in the cast are Les Dennis, who has spent the last three years playing burglar-turned-Romeo, Michael Rodwell, in ITV’s Coronation Street, as Uncle Fester.
The third announced cast member is Carrie Hope Fletcher. She will play Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, who has all grown up in the musical. Wednesday has a shocking secret that only Gomez knows: she’s fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family.
Fletcher has strong musical form. She played Eponine in Les Miserables in London and Dubai and took over the role of Truly Scrumptious in the recent tour of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for five months – having starred in the original production as Jemima Potts in 2002.
She says she has been “obsessed” with Wednesday Addams as a character since being asked sing Pulled from the musical in a West End concert in 2013, stage by Andrew Lippa who wrote the show’s music and lyrics.
Speaking on her Youtube channel It’s Way Past My Bedtime she said:” I am a really big fan of the Addams Family movies. In the last three years there has been many a rumour about the Addams Family Musical coming from Broadway to the UK.
“Every time one of those rumours has circulated I have picked up the phone to my agent and said please put me up for Wednesday if it’s true…”
Samantha Womack, who will be playing Morticia Addams, from whom Gomez has to keep Wednesday’s dreadful secret, also has strong musicals form. Notably she played Nellie Forbush in South Pacific and opposite Patrick Swayze in Michael Grandage’s West End production of Guys & Dolls.
According to press reports, Womack’s time on Eastenders is coming to an explosive end. Although the show’s producers have only confirm that: “Samantha was recently offered a big storyline which she happily accepted that leads to Ronnie departing Walford.”
Her first flirt with musical fame came in 1991 when, under her maiden name Samantha Janus, she represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest with A Message to Your Heart. The song came tenth, largely due to unfortunate wardrobe and staging decisions – not of her own making – that undermined the song’s strong anti-hunger lyrics.
Further casting of The Addams Family is to be announced, with further dates to be added to the tour which has now been extended to October 2017.
