What’s on Edinburgh’s stages this week?
The start of this Autumn’s mini-season of lunchtime theatre at the Traverse is the big news in a week when not a lot is happening. It opens with Ship Rats by Alice Clark.

★★★☆☆ Energetic
Ship Rats by Alice Clark, the first in the latest series of A Play, A Pie and A Pint at the Traverse (co-presented with Òran Mór) is a pacy and intriguing work. There are undoubtedly problems with the play, but the vigour and acuity of the production go a long way towards compensating for them.

The Edinburgh Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s centenary production of The Gondoliers heads up an otherwise dance-heavy swathe of new shows at the Festival and Studio theatres that have gone on pre-sale ahead of public sale from 11am Wednesday 20 September.

Same Team – Street Soccer Story to play Traverse in December
The final play of the Traverse’s 60th anniversary season is to be Same Team – Street Soccer Story, by Robbie Gordon and Jack Nurse, created with the women of Street Soccer’s Dundee Change Centre and inspired by the Homeless World Cup.

Twenty years on from its first television outing, Still Game has enough followers to pack out theatres, as could be seen from the record-breaking runs of the stage adaptations at the Hydro. Indeed, there was a play before there was ever a television version. So a theatre event featuring the cast would seem to be a no-brainer.

James V: Katherine to premiere at Festival Studio
Rona Munro’s James Plays, her series of Scottish history plays about the Stewart kings, is to continue with James V: Katherine, which will open at Edinburgh’s Studio Theatre in April 2024 ahead of a Scottish tour.
