Book Festival Round-up Part 2
More theatre-interests at the Book fest
The last week of the Book Festival featured the usual quota of theatrical presentations, ‘theatre-adjacent’ events, and other writers so entertaining as to need no apology for being featured here.
Ondine
★★★★☆ Well judged emotion
In a glorious mix of the heartfelt and the ridiculous, Underground Theatre bring a translation of Jean Giraudoux’s Ondine to La Belle Angele for the final week of the Fringe.
Thunderstruck
★★★★★ Striking
David Colvin’s internationally award-winning play Thunderstruck returns to the Edinburgh Fringe at The Scottish Storytelling Centre for the final two weeks of the Fringe.
Svengali
★★★★☆ Full of aces
Chloe-Ann Tylor is utterly captivating in her performance of Svengali, a gripping new monologue written and directed by Eve Nicol, produced in association with Pitlochry Festival Theatre and Pleasance Theatre.
The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee
★★★★☆ Satisfyingly goofy
In The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee, at the RSE Theatre for the final two weeks of the Fringe, Happy Sad Productions attempt to make sense of this quirky musical based on that particularly American Institution – the spelling bee.
Spring Awakening
★★★☆☆ Subdued
Edinburgh Little Theatre’s production of Spring Awakening at the RSE Theatre showcases some talented performers, but lacks energy and passion.
A Bohemian Broadway
★★★☆☆ Hits the right note
The Bohemians Lyric Opera Company is back for its traditional Fringe showcase, alighting on St Andrew’s and St George’s for two nights only with A Bohemian Broadway.
SAY IF IT’S NOT OKAY
★★★★☆ Personal and universal
There is a quiet determination to Angela Jackson’s SAY IF IT’S NOT OKAY at Greenside @ Infirmary St that makes for an intensely personal and extremely worthwhile hour.
Carnegie
★★★☆☆ Informative
Carnegie, a biographical piece set in the historic building of Panmure House, provides much elucidation.
