There is a surfeit of great theatre on Edinburgh’s stages this week. From Cora Bissett’s What Girls Are Made Of to The Myth of the Singular Moment and Local Hero, music shines through.
Prescription For Murder
★★★☆☆ Pleasing:
Prescription For Murder, from the Edinburgh Makars at the Church Hill Theatre, is one of those odd English crime dramas that provide more reassurance than apprehension.
Blitz!
★★★★☆ Explosive:
The Blitz spirit is alive and well and living in Musselburgh. More particularly, the Brunton Theatre, which is where you’ll find Lionel Bart’s unjustly forgotten follow-up to Oliver!, Blitz!.
Whistle Down The Wind
★★★☆☆ Solid:
Forth Children’s Theatre put in a solid production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jim Steinman’s musical version of Whistle Down the Wind, at the Edinburgh Academy until Saturday.
Hand to God
★★★★☆ Hot puppet action:
Packed with expletives and hot puppet-on-puppet action, EGTG’s thoroughly entertaining production of Robert Askin’s Hand to God at the Assembly Roxy is not for the faint hearted.
PPP: Chic Murray: A Funny Place For A Window
★★★★☆ Fitting tribute:
As you might expect, there are plenty of laughs in Chic Murray: A Funny Place For A Window. What is less expected is a touching and beautifully acted love story.
Edinburgh’s One Act Finalists
Arbery Productions through to Scottish final:
Two of Edinburgh’s four entries came away with awards at the Eastern Division round of the SCDA One Act Play Festival held at the Church Hill Theatre over the weekend.

Blitzing the Brunton
MAMA take on Bart’s WW2 musical:

Matilda The Musical
★★★★☆ Storytelling musical theatre:
Stories rule in the RSC’s brilliant production of Matilda The Musical in an adaptation which feels properly true to the spirit of its Roald Dahl original – complete with dangerous spikes and revolting children.
