Using one of the pieces which will feature in this year’s Fireworks Concert, an excerpt from the grand finale of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, users can fill the sky above the an image of Edinburgh Castle, making fireworks go off in time to the music.

Developed by East Lothian app creators Hippotrix, who recently created the White app for Catherine Wheels, the app allows users to fire five different kinds of firework into the sky. The display is crafted over different segments, each of which can be rewound to add extra effects. The sound of the fireworks going off is layered over the music.

fantastic visuals

Hippotrix app producer Simone Bloomfield said, “We wanted to bring the magic of Edinburgh’s world-famous Fireworks Concert to people’s pockets, so the app contains all the fantastic visuals that everyone knows and loves – even including the hugely popular waterfall down Castle Rock.

“We are delighted to be working with the Edinburgh International Festival, Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Virgin Money to bring the music of Tchaikovsky together with the latest technology in a celebration of this fabulous Edinburgh event.”

The Virgin Money Fireworks Concert will be the final act of EIF 2014 and takes place on Sunday 31st August, 9pm. Said to the largest annual fireworks concert in the world, attracting over quarter of a million people to watch more than 400,000 fireworks, choreographed to music played by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Garry Walker.

The real life display is created by international firework artists Pyrovision, headed by Keith Webb. This will be Webb’s 30th year working on event, having worked on every Festival Fireworks Concert since 1984.

This year’s concert will feature:
Wagner: Ride of the Valkyries
Beethoven: Egmont Overture
Mendelssohn: War March of the Priests from Athalie
Debussy: Marche Écossaise
Tchaikovsky: 1812 Overture

Seats in the Ross Theatre in West Princes Street Gardens have sold out, but standing tickets are still available for the gardens. The concert will be broadcast live on Forth 1 and DAB digital radio.
