Post-referendum theatre from VPT

Edinburgh’s Village Pub Theatre is staging an evening of new scratch theatre on Friday 19 September, under the banner of Independence Day? when it will also revive its famous Twitter plays.

VPT 12 Indy Day Sept 2014-800

Intriguingly, although the plays will be performed after the outcome of the referendum is known, they are all being developed before the results are announced.

Which means that the way the plays resonate with the audience will change according on the outcome. Rehearsals will not start until the morning of the 19th.

Caitlin Skinner, artistic director of VPT, told Æ: “Independence Day? is a really special event for us. There is no where else we would rather be on this hugely important day than in the Village Pub making theatre.

“I think the work we are sharing is quite beautiful with loads of room for reflection and conversation. Like a big hug but with plays and cake!”

There are six confirmed writers for the evening. Works by Ellie Stewart, Davey Anderson and Sophie Good will be next to work by Louise Knowles, Linda McLean and Elspeth Turner. VPT say that there is also the possibility of further special guest writers.

The evening will also see the return of VPT’s famous Twitter plays. The VPT Twitter feed at @pubtheatre will be tweeting details of the theme and how to enter from Monday. People will be asked to put a whole play in 140 characters and tweet it before the result of the September 18 referendum is announced.

A selection of these will then be performed at Independence Day?, although the company will know the result of the referendum once they come to rehearse them.
