Theatre creatives top Festival Theatre speakers

Theatre makers and creatives top the speakers at three free events being held at the Festival Theatre to mark International Women’s Day, Tuesday 8 March 2016.

The hour and a half-long events will be held in the theatre’s Empire Rooms, starting at 12 noon, 2.30pm and 5pm.

The events feature “a host of inspiring and talented women who will be performing and speaking about Women in history, the arts, business and politics,” say the organisers.

Speakers will include Orla O’Loughlin, the Traverse Theatre’s artistic director, Jemima Levick who was recently appointed as the new Artistic Director of Stellar Quines and Susan Morrison, co-director of Previously… Scotland’s history festival.

There will be performances from the Festival Theatre Vintage Chorus and the Wildfire Women’s Choir as well as readings by the poets Elspeth Murray and Jennifer Williams.

Also speaking will be museum curator Alice Strang and Susan Russell, chair of Women in Tourism. Lee Chalmers of the Women’s Equality Party will be in conversation with Claire Stewart of the Glasgow Women’s Library.

Session 1: 12-1.30pm

Performance from Festival Theatre Vintage Chorus.
Orla O’Loughlin will discuss her role as the Artistic Director of the Traverse Theatre and the wider landscape of women in theatre.
Alice Strang, Curator of the Modern Scottish Women exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, which examines the experiences of the unprecedented number of Scottish women who trained and practised as artists between 1885 and 1965

Session 2: 2.30-4pm

Readings by poets Elspeth Murray and Jennifer Williams from the Scottish Poetry Library
Jemima Levick, currently Artistic Director at Dundee Rep who takes over at Stellar Quines Theatre Company in May 2016, discusses her experiences of working in theatre.
Susan Russell, Marketing Manager for Festivals Edinburgh, who has recently launched and chairs Women In Tourism offers a perspective on cultural/tourism elements in addition to the arts.

Session 3: 5-6.30pm

The Wildfire Women’s Choir
Susan Morrison, comedian, festival director of Previously… Scotland’s history festival and Titanic obsessive. The woman you do not want to be stuck in a lift with, will talk about some of the fantastically feisty women of Scottish history who have fought for equality.
Lee Chalmers in conversation with Claire Stewart of the Glasgow Women’s Library talks about being a candidate for the first UK party to put gender equality at the top of the agenda: The Women’s Equality Party.
