Set in a New England university, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? finds established academic George and his feisty wife Martha inviting new professor Nick for drinks after a university faculty party, together with his nervy young wife Honey.

The two younger characters unwittingly find themselves drawn into a night of compulsive game-playing that reveals a painful vacuum at the heart of the older couple’s relationship.

The play was turned into a film in 1966 with Elizabeth Taylor famously staring as Martha against Richard Burton’s George. George Segal played Nick and Sandy Dennis was Honey.

The Grads production will be directed by David Grimes who has had recent successes with August: Osage County and Titus Andronicus.

in the midst of the battle

Grimes told Æ: “The Grads have chosen to set their Virginia Woolf in an extreme thrust, allowing the audience an intimate, ring side seat to the battle that goes on within the walls of the house.

“Framed by a representational structure, we hope you feel as if you are in the midst of the battle for every jab and punch thrown.”

The production will feature Richard Godden as George, last seen in Wildest Dreams for the Grads. Martha will be played by Mel Sherwood, who is returning to the stage after a long hiatus.

The younger couple will feature Caroline Hood as Honey – last seen with the Grads in Jerusalem, but appearing in the Behemians production of Legally Blonde. While Kyle Matson recently seen in Mine Ain Fowk and with the Grads last fringe in The Witch of Edmonton. will play Nick.
